Keio Electric Railway announced on March 16, 2016 that it will begin operating pay-as-you-go seat reservation trains in the spring of 2018. The new Series 5000 cars will be introduced with 50 cars (10 fixed cars x 5 trains), and the production company will be Sogo Sharyo Manufacturing Co. The car body is made of stainless steel. The exterior of the new train will adopt a sharp frontal shape to clearly distinguish it from existing trains, and black will be used for the front livery. The new cars will also feature reduced power consumption, LED lighting, a new VVVF inverter control system, and a new on-board storage battery system.
The seats are designed to be convertible between commuter train-style long seats, which sit side by side in the longitudinal direction, and cross seats, which seat two people in a row. |
The interior will be decorated in brown tones and will be equipped with power outlets, air purifiers and free public wireless LAN facilities as “additional services for paying customers”.
The cars will be equipped with storage batteries, which will be charged with the regenerative power generated when the brakes are applied and supplied as power for the trains to run on, thereby improving the efficiency of regenerative power use and further reducing the amount of running power.
For more details, please see the official announcement (PDF).
It was later announced that the first trains with long seats will begin operation on September 29, 2017, and the reserved-seat trains will begin operation on February 22, 2018, as scheduled. The two operating systems are Keio Shinjuku – Keio Hachioji and Keio Shinjuku – Hashimoto. Stops in the Keio-Hachioji direction are Shinjuku, Fuchu, Bunpegahara, Seiseki Sakuragaoka, Takahatafudo, and Kitano. For Hashimoto, the stops are Shinjuku, Keio Nagayama, Keio Tama Center, and Minami-Osawa. The train will operate from 8 p.m. to midnight on weekdays and from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. on weekends and holidays. 10 trains per day, one per hour, will run on each of the two lines. |

Series 7000 (2, 4, 6, 8, 10 cars fixed formation, car length 20m)
Series 7000 was the first Keio stainless steel train, which appeared in 1984. 190 cars were built until 1996. 7000 Series was designed based on Series 6000, but the front design was symmetrical, and the front light was square and integrated with the tail light. The main control system adopted armature field chopper control, and the main electric motors were DC DC direct-wound mot ors, but the main control system was replaced with VVVF inverter control andcage-type three-phase AC induction motors by FY2010 along with the refurbishment of the car body. |

Series 8000 (4-, 6-, and 8-car fixed formation; car length: 20 m)
The Series 8000 was introduced in 1992 and 244 cars were manufactured by Nippon Sharyo and Tokyu Sharyo between 1999. The features include a lightweight stainless steel body structure, downsized equipment, and Keio’s first VVVF inverter control system. Eight cage-type three-phase AC induction mot ors with a rated output of 150 kW are controlled by a VVVF inverter controller using Hitachi GTO thyristor elements. The bogies are the same type of pedestal-type axle box support (axle spring) and air spring suspension directly connected to the car body as the Series 6000 and Series 7000, the TS-823A bogie (for electric cars) and the TS-824 bogie (for accompanying cars).
Inside the car, bucket seats are used, and electric indicators and door chimes are installed above the doors. |

Series 9000 (8- and 10-car fixed formation, car length 20m)
The Series 9000 is a new type of train that started commercial operation on January 24, 2001, and was selected for the Good Design Award in the same year.
The features of this stainless steel train are even lighter than the Series 8000, and to further reduce energy consumption, a Hitachi, Ltd. two-level VVVF inverter control system using IGBT elements is installed in the M1 car system, with a single inverter controlling eight cage-type three-phase AC induction motors ( 170 kW). The drive system uses the WN parallel cardan drive system, and the brake system is an all-electric command air brake with regenerative braking.
The interior of the train is equipped with an electric sign above the door to indicate the next stop, door opening and closing chimes, and wheelchair spaces in two or four places in each train. The last two digits of the car number is 30 (10-car formation), and it is distinguished from other formations, and this series was put into service on the Toei Shinjuku Line. The number of cars in service is 264.
The Series 6000 that was out of service and scrapped has been moved to here ( Retired Cars). |

Series 1000 (Inokashira Line, 5-car fixed formation, car length 20m)
Series 1000 started commercial operation on January 9, 1996, the first new model in 34 years. It is the first train on the Inokashira Line with a car length of 20 meters, a one-handle main transmission, a VVVF inverter control system, a cage-type three-phase AC induction motor ( 180Kw), etc., and is equipped with an electric command air brake with regenerative braking. The initial MT ratio was 2M3T due to the high output motor mounted on the lightweight car body, but due to frequent dry running and sliding in the rain, the MT ratio was changed to 3M2T starting with the 1011F formation.
The problem has been solved by installing a serajet sprayer (sand spreader) and other measures up to the 1010F formation.
The number of cars in the Fujimigaoka Inspection District is 145 cars (1001F – 1015F, 1021F – 1034F trains) in 29 5-car trains.
The Series 3000 cars that are no longer in service have been moved here ( retired cars).
The gauge of Keio Line
The gauge of Keio Main Line and Keio Inokashira Line are different. The gauge of the Inokashira line is 1,067mm, and there is no contact between the two lines. The Inokashira line is an independent line. |
